2014 Jicarilla & Placitas Wild Horses
Based out of Bernalillo & Chama, New Mexico May 23rd - 26th, 2014

Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory (Carson National Forest)
This 76,000-acre wild horse territory is home to about 400 wild horses of mixed ancestry. Some bands seem to invite us closer while others flee across the landscape offering a variety of photographic opportunities. The landscape varies from open range, to pinon and juniper dotted woodlands, to tall ponderosa pines as it approaches the Colorado border. In addition to the horses, many wildlife species including elk, deer, bears, turkeys, mountain lions, golden eagles, and others call this home. Tracking and photographing these horses is a true adventure.

Placitas Free-Roaming Horses
These horses have roamed the beautiful rolling foothills of the Sandia Mountains on BLM and private land for at least 50 years. Because of their close proximity to civilization, they have become quite approachable. This often provides an opportunity to accompany them on their daily rituals to observe and photograph the behavior and social dynamics of family bands. Sage dotted mesas under the famous New Mexico sky make a dramatic backdrop for these pretty little bands of pintos, grays, blacks, bays, and more.

Wild Horses of the Carolina Coast Photo Intensive
May 26th – June 1st, 2014; North Carolina

Some 500 years ago Western Civilization crashed into the North American continent. Today, the barrier islands that unfurl along the North Carolina coast like so many ribbons of sand are home to a living testament of this past. Considered by many to be descendants of some of the very first equines to be brought to the new world and thus potentially the oldest known herds of wild horses in North America, the wild horses that eek out a living along the undeveloped islands of North Carolina are quite unlike anything else in the world.

Water is at the heart of these horses' existence and adaptation. For 500 years these horses have been shaped by it. Therefore water is at heart of photography here as well. Picture stallions galloping through the water and fighting nearly chest deep in it. Imagine a breed of horse that each and every day, wades out into the swift tidal currents, kicks free from terra firma and swims out to distant islands to feed. This is wild horse photography along the Carolina Coast.

The Pryor Mountain Wild Horses, known for their beautiful Spanish characteristics and colors, offer a unique opportunity to intimately observe and photograph wild horse behavior and social dynamics. Because these horses are habituated to humans, wonderful close-up and action shots are available. June is the ideal time to capture the colorful dynamics of this herd as new foals are being born and stallions vie for mares. From the red rock, high desert landscape of Wyoming to the semi-alpine slopes of Montana, there are beautiful views and photographs to be had along the way. Other species of wildlife that call these areas home are bighorn sheep, deer, mountain lions, and bears, to name a few.
