|I have been involved with horses since I was 10 years old. I cannot imagine life without them. During a time in Fort Collins Colorado, as my husband was earning his phd., I studied Equine Science and received my Riding Instructor's certification. We moved to Corvallis, Oregon, where I studied graphic design, but then decided to purchase Crescent Valley Equestrian Center. After owning and running the 42-horse boarding stable, I decided to sell when we moved to Arizona. I decided to make photography my profession instead of my hobby.
We built our home and my studio NE of Phoenix surrounded by the beautiful Sonoran Desert and Tonto National Forest. Our three Tennessee Walking Horses live here during the cooler times of the year. We enjoy long trail rides right from our home. During the summer months, our horses get to live north of Cortez, Colorado, running free on 300 acres of pasture at 7,000'. We visit them a few times each summer, taking pack trips and day rides into the mountains.
I had been an avid photographer since college days (late 1970s), but in 2004, I joined the Professional Photographers of America, and the Arizona Professional Photographers, to raise my level to that of professional. I am active in both organizations. I passed the difficult exam for becoming a Certified Professional Photographer, or CPP, 5 years ago. This year I had two of my competition images garner Loan status with the International Photographic Competition of PPA, something that has been extremely gratifying.
Recently, I decided to concentrate on equine and fine art photography instead of human portraiture. Although I enjoy creating portraits, and have worked hard to reach a the level of professional quality, fine art based on western lifestyle, equines, and nature photography drive mind and soul even more. I was an art major at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, so that background seems to have stuck, and continues to be an influence.
A Volunteer Trip Leader with the Arizona Highways Photo Workshops organization, I help facilitate the workshops that others teach, help with the participants, and receive continuing education as well as new photography friends.
