The Sheldon Wildlife Refuge: Wild Horses and Burros in Need

Postby Stacy Snow on Mon Jan 21, 2013 2:32 am

On September 27, 2012, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved a new Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) for managing the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in NW Nevada. The Fish and Wildlife Service website states that, “Based on all collected information, the Service has revised its management direction to address the issue of feral horses and burros on the Refuge, located in northwestern Nevada.” The above-mentioned revision in the Horse and Burro Management Program will, “…remove horses and burros from Sheldon Refuge by 2017.”

The Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that there are approximately 800 horses and 90 burros in the current population on the refuge. Over the next five years, ALL of those horse and burros (and any offspring) will be gathered and removed from the refuge.

My hope in sharing this information is to raise awareness of the plight of these animals and to spur creative brainstorming on their behalf to help them find good adoptive homes.

The following organizations are listed on the Fish and Wildlife Service website as certified adoption agents. Anyone interested in adopting is instructed to contact these agents directly.
