Re: Colorado Cowboys and Horse Drive Workshop Photos

Taking this picture was a fun challenge. I was in the back of the pickup moving at X mph. The horses were moving alongside the truck, but at a different, slower speed. The speed of the pan was ever so much slower than the speed of the horse or of the truck: it was the difference between the two of them. It was hard to keep the horse in the same place in the viewfinder's frame.

It kind of worked, and at least the horse's shoulder and barrel are in focus. The houses in the background are blurred, as well as the grasses at the horses' feet. Fun stuff!

according to my contacts at Sombrero the headcount for the drive was 679 horses. The numbers you may have heard the wranglers discussing might have been the group from one pen. No way were there only 300, this was the largest group I ever saw!

almost every shot seems like a jigsaw puzzle...watching all those horses maneuver across the creek was very entertaining.

I don't know when I will be through editing all mine but wanted to share a campfire shot. Ed is so great to work with because he loves new ideas and always rises to the challenge, all I had to do was mention the idea and he had people digging a fire pit and setting the scene for us.

I was ducked down in the gully to capture the stagecoach...felt like I was in a western movie!

I was fascinated by how things were created/built on the ranch....for instance, the gates!

The "bad boys" were being driven across a little creek and had to do a bit of a jump to get over it. Some of them, of course, put more "oooomph" into it than others. The cowboys encourage the horses to follow the rider(s) or move forward with "come on, boys". Interesting since the herd usually includes a mix of boys and girls. ; )

I was pretty far back here, using a wide angle lens so I didn't show the whole bridge here...what a sound all of those hooves made as they moved across smartly...
