Adopt Mustangs and Burros From Litchfield, CA Corrals

I started visiting the BLM Wild Horse and Burro corrals in Litchfield, CA last year to photograph the mustangs and burros. There are hundreds of horses of every shape, age and color at the corrals and some fuzzy burros too. All are available for adoption. My hope was to try to raise awareness about the animals at the facility needing homes and to help people find their own horse or burro by sharing my photos on Facebook. My photos are posted on the Facebook page, "Adopt California Mustangs and Burros." The page is still in the building process as new photos and information are added after each visit.

The facility is composed of a series of large corrals which hold the animals in different age groups. They are also separated by sex. You will often see horses from the same herd grouped together, especially when they are new to the corrals.

This sweet boy came up to the fence and stayed near me for the entire time that I photographed the horses in his corral. The last time I visited, he again came up to the fence to see me. I think this one wants to connect. Let's find him a home! :D

There are horses of every color at the corrals. You definitely will have lots of choices if you decide to adopt. The corrals are open Monday-Friday and the public can visit to look at the horses. Videll is the contact at the corrals at 530-254-6575. She is wonderful!

If you are thinking about adopting, there are requirements and an application that needs to be submitted. Check out the BLM Adoption Program page for more information.

Some horses at the BLM corrals may qualify for the TIP Program. TIP (Trainer Incentive Program) is administered by the Mustang Heritage Foundation which identifies qualified trainers to gentle mustangs before adoption. The adoption fee is still only $125 for the adopter. Contact the corrals directly for information on TIP horse qualifications.

After TIP training you should be able to:

Halter the horse
Lead the horse
Groom the horse
Pick up all four feet
Load and unload into a trailer

Read more about the TIP Program on the Mustang Heritage Foundation page.

Please Consider Adopting A Mustang! :D

In addition to adopting directly from the corrals, the BLM also offers online Internet Adoptions throughout the year. There is one going on right now which ends on February 10th.

Here are some helpful links:
